Quality Management and ISO 9000ff certification in the Baltic countries
|
In 1997, GFE was assigned by the German Federal Government's TRANSFORM Programme, which is implemented by the German Bank for Reconstruction (Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau - KfW), to provide Quality Management Advice to Latvian private industrial companies. The programme aims among others at improving the competitiveness of Latvian industrial companies on a long-term basis through the provision of management advice.
The focal point of the programme is the provision of advice in the field of Quality Management, particularly assistance to enterprises in their efforts to acquire certification according to ISO 9000xx standards, and, as from 2000, according to ISO 9000:2000 standards. Where necessary and appropriate, the programme also focuses on the implementation of HACCP standards in the companies. Project activities cover all aspects of quality management, ranging from the implementation of Total Quality Management Systems to the preparation of the QM documentation to the final acquisition of ISO certification. The implementation of Quality Management becomes an increasingly important issue for Latvian companies in facilitating cooperation with international clients. An ISO certificate serves as a warrant for well-established operational processes of the company and an efficient organizational structure.
Although Quality Management is a central aspect of the programme, it is not restricted to TQM assistance, it provides on the contrary assistance in virtually all areas which contribute to increasing companies' competitiveness and encouraging co-operation with west European countries. Therefore, the programme is also oriented towards marketing and sales advice, organisational restructuring and optimisation of production processes.
In providing Quality Management Advice to the companies, GFE is being supported by a number of qualified local experts who complement the German consultants' activities and undertake to supervise the project progress during the consultants' absence.
GFE has so far guided a number of 20 Latvian companies to ISO certification. They particularly come from the wood processing, plastics, glass processing, printing and chemical industries. In view of the very positive track record of the individual projects, the German Bank for Reconstruction will continue the Quality Management Programme also in 2001 on behalf of a number of other companies from the wood and food processing, textile and building sectors.GFE has a pool of qualified and renowned quality management consultants available to prepare companies for certification according to ISO standards.
